Why become a supply teacher?
Every teacher is different. For some, supply teaching is a very attractive option. Working as a supply teacher offers constant variety and flexibility, as well as the chance to build new relationships and experiences.
Why do supply teachers prefer short-term teaching to permanent roles? We asked Karen, one of our fantastic supply teachers, to tell us about her experiences.
What do you most enjoy about being a supply teacher?
It’s great having the flexibility of being able to choose which schools you go to and which days you work.
What do you get out of supply teaching that you don’t get from permanent roles?
I can still enjoy teaching children, which I love, but I don’t have the added pressure of planning and assessing and long-term development goals.
Does supply teaching help with your work-life balance?
It is very different to being a permanent teacher. I have a lot more free time, because I prefer to stick to PPA and NQT cover mostly.
How often do you return to the same schools?
Because I’ve been lucky enough to be asked back a lot, I’ve only really worked in a few schools over the past two years. Currently I’m working four days a week at the same school, with one day kept free for other daily supply work.
How has working as a supply teacher helped your career?
In 12 years of teaching, I had previously only taught reception and year one; but I have now taught up to year four. Even though I’m still an early years teacher at heart, teaching older children has helped me to develop my knowledge of subjects, as well as develop my behaviour management skills.
What’s the fastest your consultant has been able to find you work?
My consultant (Louise) was able to find me work within a couple of days. I am always very pleased by how helpful she is.
Do you think supply teaching is a good way for new teachers to gain experience?
My son did some supply work when he first qualified. It made him realise that he wasn’t really an early years person, but more suited to the secondary school role which he had trained for. So yes!
